Just as the waves of the ocean meet the mountain of Big Sur, in California, Esalen® Massage is a whole body, whole self enveloping experience. It was created in this beautiful land where water and earth meet, and where also explorers of the mind, body, and spirit have been gathering for the last 50 years.
It is a place that gave birth to revolutionary modalities like Holotropic Breathwork, 5Rythms®, Continuum Movement®, Gestalt Therapy, among many others that explored the intrinsic connection between the body, mind and spirit, all feeding and learning from each other's views and perspectives and changing the way the world views the human body and psyche.
Esalen® Massage was created as a complement to that exploration. Being a combination of different bodywork modalities, Swedish, gentle Thai stretches, precise Deep Tissue, and quiet Craniosacral work are all threaded in the massage through long enveloping strokes. It was created as a way to bring awareness to the body, while remaining in presence and connection with our human psyche and spirit. In other words, it was the means to bring all the elements: Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Ether into one continuous dance. A beautiful heart softening dance.
